This Thursday, December 10, at 5:30 pm, HSHMC is pleased to offer a one-hour virtual Parent Academy entitled “The Teenage Brain.” (password: Brain) Please join us for this special session as we explore why our teenagers’ brains cause them to think and act the way they do, especially during this time of COVID-19 and Distance Learning. Help us meet our goal of clearing all incompletes before winter break! Together we can support our students to make this happen over the next two weeks. If your child is still carrying an “I” (Incomplete) from Quarter 1, attendance at their academic recovery class is mandatory until all incompletes are cleared. It is also expected that any student who holds an incomplete in any course is actively taking advantage of teachers’ online office hours and resources we have put in place to support their academic efforts. Students who do not make an effort to clear their incompletes are at risk of failing the course. Please check your child’s grades using PowerSchool. If you need any help setting up your access, please contact the school and we will gladly help you.

As a reminder, nutritious meals are available to you through San Diego Unified’s Curbside Grab and Go Meal program. Meals are available to all HSHMC students Monday through Friday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm from our designated meal pick up location at Wilson Middle School (3838 Orange Avenue). Stay well and have a great week, thank you!

Dear HSHMC families and friends,

We can’t always get what we want… we want to get back to our campus. We want to physically reunite our students, staff and families. We know every one of you wants this as well. We miss each other in so many ways.

We want to return to a safe campus with reasonable confidence that we will not have to close our doors soon again. We, like many of you, watch the news to see the rise and fall in the spread of COVID 19. We see that areas of the country, including ours, show weeks of positive signs of COVID 19 containment, followed by a resurgence of the disease. We see restaurants, businesses, and even schools, opening and then being forced to close, causing untold disappointment and disruption. And we see pressure and argument from communities to reopen them again despite the fact that disease surges continue. We see people both taking precautions, such as social distancing and mask wearing, to prevent the spread; and, we see others making decisions not to do so. Most sadly, we each know people and families who have fallen ill to this terrible disease. And we know that each of us have faced major challenges adjusting our lifestyles, our jobs, our financial challenges and our learning.

Let me repeat, we want to return to a safe campus with reasonable confidence that we will not have to close our doors again. But we cannot rely on short-term positive trends in disease outbreaks, or the heavy pressure of our desires to reopen campus, or the decisions of other schools, to rush to a decision to do so. With the support of our Board of Directors, administrators, staff, and our parent advisory committee, we have committed to make any future decision to reopen campus based on a level of confidence that the surges in new outbreaks are behind us. We await the impact of effective vaccines and treatments. And when that occurs our reopening plans will be well thought out, well communicated and well organized. With current surge conditions, changes in weather and upcoming holidays that may result in families’ and friends’ increased contact risks, we do expect our campus to remain closed for at least the remainder of the semester. We are sharing this information to help you plan accordingly and to give you our best thinking. We promise you that we reexamine our options daily based on our commitment to consider safety first and when the time appears right to reconsider opening we will do so with readied excitement.

We can’t always get what we want, but… together let us commit to try to give each other what we need. We have learned so much in the last 6 months about offering a quality education online. Our teachers are better supported and equipped. Our new attendance and reengagement teams are helping students who struggle to attend and to complete work through contacts, supports, safe home visits and contracts. Our education specialists are reinventing themselves to deliver the quality individual educational plans our students deserve. Our advisories and mentors are creating another opportunity to build relationships with each student in order to help manage the challenges of school and life. We have invested heavily in acquiring and using the best available technologies to facilitate teaching and learning. And we have tried our best to reach out to each family to make sure we address technology, social emotional or other needs that can promote student health and learning. We continue to reach out to you. How can we help? How can we better involve and inform you? How have we improved our partnerships with you and how can we do better? Please continue to inform us and connect with us through various opportunities regularly listed on our website at www.hshmc.org. We are excited to announce that we will soon be upgrading student computers and software such that the quality of what happens in our virtual classes continues to grow.

In other words, even though we are not yet ready to reopen our campus (which is what we want) our virtual online program is quickly gaining the same reputation for educational excellence and access that we earned with our campus-based program. Every student deserves the best that we can offer. We are providing a quality educational program and it is improving daily (which is what we need).

Stay safe, stay smart, stay engaged with us. Together we will better provide each other what we need.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ian Pumpian, CEO

If you have not yet made your parent account, please do so now. We mailed out your access codes and directions on how to create your account last week. In addition, your child’s mentor has the access codes you need to create the account and can help you as well.

Once you have created your PowerSchool account, our next request is to ask you to please log in and click on forms where you will find our Free or Reduced Lunch form that we need filled out for each family. We will be using our own form this year, instead of the District form used in the past. Thank you for completing this as soon as possible, but no later than October 1.

Thank you for making sure your child is on time for each scheduled session. Attendance will be taken during the first 15 minutes of each Zoom class session and you will be notified if your child is not in attendance. If your child needs to be absent for any Zoom session, please call the school ahead of time at 619-528-9070 to report the absence.

Our upper division students begin their Monday college and internship classes this week. Please make sure they check PowerSchool to be sure they are ready to log on to Canvas at their scheduled class time.

If you have questions, or just want to touch base, I am holding Principal’s Office Hours via Zoom at 9:00 am on Tuesday and Thursday this week. The Zoom link is available below. I can also be reached by email anytime at sjohnson@hshmc.org.

Have a great week!

If you were unable to join us for our informational webinar last week, a recording of that session is now available on our website HERE. We hope you will find it informative and that it will help you support your child during this time of distance learning. We are all in this together and your partnership is invaluable.

August 27th Parent Webinar

Dear HSHMC Families,

Welcome to the new 2020-2021 school year at HSHMC!

We hope you are doing well and staying safe. In preparation for the First Day of School ONLINE on Monday, August 31, we have put together specific school supplies for each student based on the courses they will be taking. In addition, each student who has not already checked out a Chromebook from HSHMC will be provided one from HSHMC. Log in credentials and instructions will also be provided. We are asking HSHMC families to please drive by the school to pick up their supplies according to the following schedule:

  • 9th Grade – Tuesday, August 25 – 9:00 am – 11:00 am
  • 10th Grade – Tuesday, August 25 – 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
  • 11th Grade – Wednesday, August 26 – 9:00 am – 11:00 am
  • 12th Grade – Wednesday, August 26 – 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Thursday, August 27 – 9:00 am – 11:00 am – Makeup Day (For those who cannot make it at their assigned time)

If you have more than one HSHMC student, please use the schedule according to your oldest child so you only have to come by once. For example, if you have a 9th grader and an 11th grader, please use the pick up on the day scheduled for the 11thgrader.

On the day of pickup, please drive into the school’s driveway where you will see a tent and signs for pickup. A staff member will place the supplies in the trunk of your car to limit contact and practice social distancing.

In addition, here is some important information for your review and attention:

School Calendar – we hope you will find this useful to mark special school days and holidays in advance.

Free & Reduced-Price Meal Application Packet – We ask that all students please fill this form out whether or not you believe that your child qualifies for free or reduced price meals. If you have more than one child attending HSHMC, please only fill out one form and include each child on that form. (Returning students: please note that a new form must be filled out each year).

The Free and Reduced Price Meal Application must be completed by going HERE.

Health and Wellness – You child’s health and wellness are very important to us. HSHMC is committed to supporting the mental and emotional wellness of our students as these barriers can impact student success. Access to community pupil mental health services and resources is made available through our website at https://www.hshmc.org/mental-health-wellness.

We look forward to welcoming all of you to HSHMC very soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sheri Johnson
